Central Station SLA convenes and delivers a scope of much needed Health, Fitness, Sports and Wellness services for young people and families in a community based, “safe harbor” destination in South Los Angeles.
Conceived by Breakthrough LA Founder Tara Guber, her vision for Central Station represents a landmark partnership of LA based sports teams, health service providers and community groups to serve the communities in which they reside. We will use the combined promotional power of these teams to attract funders and engage the community in patronizing the venue.
Breakthrough LA is currently in initial discussion to create the first Central Station at The Accelerated School at Martin Luther King Blvd & Main in South LA, an iconic charter school that Tara Guber helped found over 20 years ago. To date, CS SLA has attracted the interest of USC, CA Community Foundation, Childrens Institute, Yoga Ed, LAFC, and several regional sports teams.
THE NEED
The Pillars of the LAFC Foundation and the LA Dodgers are Sports, Education and Health Wellness. We believe these are the key elements of personal and community transformation and that each compliment and enhances the other, especially when convened in one destination.
After school, evenings, weekends and school breaks are high risk times for inner city youth who lack opportunities for meaningful activities. There is a significant lack of crucial child and family crisis and social services in South LA and the City of Los Angeles, especially for those suffering emotional and physical abuse. Schools and community centers can serve portions of these needs but lack the depth, resources and accessibility that Central Station will provide.
